Christmas

As we become engulfed in the busyness of Christmas it can quickly become a stressful and overwhelming event. Amidst the commercialism of this sacred holiday we lose sight of the true meaning of Christmas. In Kindergarten we have been looking at various symbols that we see at Christmas and are reminded of how we can use them to have our eyes and thoughts on Christ this Christmas season. Here are a few…
The Tree - points us to heaven and reminds us that God is love
The Wreath - is a circle reminding us that God's love for us never ends
The Candle - shines brightly, showing us that Jesus is the light of the world
The Candy Cane - is shaped like a shepherd's staff reminding us that Jesus is our shepherd
The Presents - remind us of God's gift to the world.
As we journey through this Christmas season may we remember to keep focussed on the Christ child and the precious gift that was given to us in a manger.

A modern day spin on a parable-The Workers in the Vineyard

In Grade 8 Bible, students have been learning about how Jesus used parables to connect His teachings to real life scenarios for the people he was teaching to.  The students in Grade 8 were challenged to modernize one of Jesus’ parables.  They had to use technology to communicate the parable they chose. Each group of students were given a school iPad and used iMovie to create their modern day parable.  Students were to read the biblical parable, create a modern day explanation for it, write a script, create props/set and record their video.  The following is an example of one group’s work.

Why Teach Drama?

Why Teach Drama?

"Tell me and I will forget. Show me and I will remember. Involve me and I will understand." Chinese Proverb
Why involve students in dramatic arts? Well, apart from the entertainment value for the school community, dramatic arts education is an important venue for creativity. Participating in drama is sharing in telling a story. Dramatic exploration can provide students with an outlet for emotions, thoughts, and dreams that they might not otherwise have means to express. A student can, if only for a few moments, become another, explore a new role, empathize, and begin to understand other perspectives. All this can happen within a safe school atmosphere. At the center of all drama is communication. Like all the arts, drama allows students to communicate with and understand others in new ways. Perhaps more than any other art form, drama also provides training in the very practical aspects of communication so necessary in today's information-centered world. Students who have participated in dramatic activities require self-control and the ability to work with others, as well as build confidence for public speaking. We thank God for the gift of communication and creativity.

A Quiet Day

Friday was a quiet day at Woodstock Christian School. It was a day for teachers to reflect on the previous nights' discussions, to re- evaluate and to focus on next steps for many of their students.
Last Wednesday and Thursday night the school was bustling with activity. Parents zig -zagged through the halls, past the various book fair vendors, stopping to chat with other parents whom they haven't seen for a while, and browsing their children's work in the halls. Parent Teacher Interviews …a time for parents and teachers and students to connect and learn from each other. It was a time to pray together for each other, celebrate achievements, to take leadership by many of our older students through their student led conferences and to strengthen the partnerships between home and school. It was a time to applaud and put hands up in the air, cry and laugh, talk and listen, focus on strengths and weakness, a time to once again acknowledge our mission as parents and teachers. It was a time for students, parents and teachers to stand united in our knowledge that our God is above all, through all and in all.  Praise God for the Woodstock Christian School community!
