Remembrance Day

Just before Remembrance Day, Grade Two students worked hard on creating posters to help foster the tradition of remembrance among Canadians. Their posters were submitted to the Royal Canadian Legion Poster Contest.
This morning, their hard work was recognized as they had a surprise guest visit their classroom. Mr. Stephen Smith, from the Royal Canadian Legion Woodstock Branch came to share with the students the news that there were 5 students who won in the local contest, and two who went on to complete in the next level. Brett, Lauryn, Abby, Tyler, and Elena all placed in our local competition and were honoured with medals, certificates, and even some prize money. Congratulations to all the Grade Two students who worked hard and created some beautiful posters!

Welcome Wednesday is a great time for you to see if we are the right elementary school for your family! When you stop by we will visit classrooms in session, meet the staff and have time to discuss your questions.

Once Again

Once Again – A Light Shining
For the past year, there has been a new light shining in the Woodstock Community! Our Once Again Upscale, Resale Store opened its doors last March, providing a place for people to come buy good, used clothing, housewares, books, tools, furniture and much more for their homes. The donations from the WCS community have been overwhelming and our staff (Ina Sanders, Sue DeBoer & Marion Schelhaas) along with the volunteers have worked hard to make this a place where the light of Jesus shines each day! The purpose for the store is to generate funds to make tuition for our families more affordable; however as we lived through our first year, God has worked another purpose for the store as well! We have been called to provide a place where people can donate items they no longer use or need, and a place where people can come to buy items they need at great, affordable prices. We have been called to be Christ's hands and feet in our community in ways that we had never dreamed about! When you visit or volunteer in the store, you feel that love of Christ, and are blessed!
The morning after the fire that caused extensive smoke damage in the store (see article on the next page in Parent Link), I stood outside the store beside the staff and members of the Once Again Board of Directors. They were sad and quiet- there were some tears as the reality of what had happened took hold. But not despair… instead a sense of God's comforting presence enveloped us all, and in the quiet, a sense of determination and strength took root. Later that evening as I sat with the group in their meeting, we read 2 Corinthians 4 "….God hasn't left our side, we've been thrown down, but we haven't broken….. So we're not giving up. How could we? Even though on the outside it often looks like we're falling apart on us, on the inside, where God is making new life, not a day goes by without his unfolding grace." (The Message). In that assurance, we go on…..
We are rolling up our sleeves, ready to clean up the mess so the store will be ready to open again very soon. And then, we pray, there will be a party to celebrate and thank God for the first year of this special light in the Woodstock community!

DONATE A TOTE PROJECT: How can we help? We can donate a tote!!! When the items from the store have been cleaned, we'd like to store them in totes, rather than in cardboard boxes). You are invited to donate an empty tote (any size/colour- new/used)… just bring it to school and we'll forward it to the store! How many totes can we collect? If each student brings in one tote, we'll have almost 200 totes to donate!!!

Once Again-Upscale Resale

As with any celebration, this week started off with some excitement over at Once Again. We, as Board and staff, were eagerly anticipating our anniversary celebrations. God has blessed us with a year of being in business and being able to be a part of the Woodstock community in this capacity. We feel strongly that we have been able to bless the community around us as much as they have been a blessing to us. With that being said, it was devastating to receive word that there had been a fire at the store. While the media has stated that the fire was at Once Again, we now know that the fire was in our neighbouring space used by The Little Theatre. Let's Eat Cake and Once Again have also sustained damage. This is a loss for all three businesses and all those involved with each business. We pray that these neighbouring businesses feel the love and support of the community, just as much as we are feeling it. Keep all involved in your prayers. We rejoice that there was no loss of life and we are thankful that the Firefighters and Police responders were kept safe. We also pray that the true value of community may be evident for all three businesses as we each try to figure out what the next steps are. It's financially stressful for businesses and it's hard to see all the hard work of people literally go up in smoke. We will do our best to keep you up to date. Thank you again and again for your continued support. God is good and we know he will lead us through this.

Pancake Breakfast and Our Buddy System

Woodstock Christian School has a system of "buddy classes". They are classrooms paired up at the beginning of the year. Older students help out younger students. This has proven to be a blessing for both. The younger students LOVE recognizing and "hanging out" with the older students, and the older ones LOVE to teach and help the younger ones. They often meet once each week to read together, work on projects together or create presentations for the school to enjoy.
At the end of February all our students enjoyed a delicious pancake breakfast (BIG HUGE thank you to all the volunteers that prepared, served and cleaned up!)! Our buddy classes ate breakfast together. Here is a short video as a wonderful example of the students helping and working together!

Save the date - April 5, 2014 : Spring Fest is coming! (Formerly known as the Bazaar) It's that time of year again to join us for a fun day out in support of Woodstock Christian School. NEW this year is $5 Breakfast served by the WCS Staff and a LIVE auction of amazing SPRING items! Returning this year is the Marketplace, Games, Coffee Corner, Spring Flowers, Dutch treats, Bake Table, and Silent Auction. We are so thankful for all the support already. If you like to help out as well, we would love more donations for the Silent Auction and for the Bake Table. Due to Health Dept. rules, please do not bake items that need to be refridgerated. Our Vision

Now What?

Now What?
Yesterday morning, many of us got up early to watch ‘our’ team go for the gold. And they got it! (Hurray, Canada!!) Now it’s over. We won the hockey games, and did well – or even very well – in many other events. We’re proud of our Canadian Olympians. We screamed, "Go, Canada, go!” and they did. Now, the Olympians and we, the observers return to normal life. What have we all learned? Here are just a few thoughts for us to consider:
1. If you want to even be included in the race, it will require discipline and training. This applies to life in general, and more specifically to our Christian ‘race’: "Let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus…” (Heb. 12:1,2)
2. Even great athletes (students, parents, teachers) often lose or mess up, and can learn to handle their disappointments and discouragements with grace, good sportsmanship and strong character.
3. Even countries (people, churches) that disagree on some things can lay aside their differences to come together for the accomplishment of a worthy task.
4. Our speed skater, Junio, gave his spot to Morrison, showing us that we can set aside envy, pride and self for the sake of ‘the team’.
5. Canadian coach Wadsworth demonstrated care and respect for a Russian skier when he gave him a ski so that he could finish the race with dignity. That kind of character is something we should strive for in our Canadian Christian community.
As Canadians, we can leave these games knowing that the world sees Canada as a worthy contender in winter sports, but more importantly, as a country where selflessness, respect and the dignity of the individual still exist.
